Soviet Occupation of afghanistan
To start off the Afghan Government secured a treaty that allowed them to request Soviet troops for protection. The Afghans eventually began calling for bigger units. The Soviets eventually took over Afghanistan in December of 1979. The Soviets led Afghan forces against Mujahideen groups. The Mujahideen groups received weapons and billions of dollars from the US, the UK, Saudi Arabia, and other countries. When the Geneva Accords were signed the war was essentially ended. The Soviets were gone by February 1989.
